Car Accident Involves Police Department Vehicle

Today at 12:06pm, officers from District 3 responded to the area of American Legion Highway and Walk Hill Street to assist an officer, who was pursuing a stolen motor vehicle. Officers initiated a stop of the suspect vehicle as it turned right onto Walk Hill Street. In an effort to bring the suspect vehicle to a stop, officers strategically placed a marked cruiser in front of the suspect vehicle while a second cruiser followed directly behind the vehicle.As officers approached, they instructed the operator to shut off the car and exit the vehicle. The suspect ignored the officer's verbal commands and placed the vehicle in reverse, accelerated backwards and struck a police department vehicle. The suspect continued to accelerate in reverse pushing the police cruiser while with the officer remained in the driver’s seat. The suspect then placed the vehicle in drive and fled. Officers lost site of the vehicle, but soon observed it at the intersection of Walk Hill Street and Wenham Street, where it had collided with a dump truck. The accident occurred when the suspect vehicle reportedly attempted to maneuver between a dump truck and another vehicle. The collision caused the other vehicle to strike several parked cars on Walk Hill Street. The occupants of the dump truck were not injured. A police officer was treated and released from a local area hospital. Two other victims were transported to Faulkner Hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries. The suspect was transported to Brigham and Women's Hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries. Boston Police will seek criminal complaints against the suspect in court.
