PHONING A FRIEND HELPS POLICE HOOK UP TWO FOR UNARMED ROBBERYAt approximately 3:10pm, on Friday, September 12, 2008, officers from Area B-2 (Roxbury/Mattapan) responded to a radio call for a robbery in progress in the area of Columbia Road and Bird Street. On arrival, officers spoke with the victim who stated she was walking to the bus stop when she heard a group of males walking behind her. In short time, one of the males grabbed her bag and knocked her to the ground. When she looked up, the victim says she observed four black males running away from the scene. Knowing she had a friend living in the direction the suspects were running, the victim grabbed her cell phone and called the friend. When her friend answered the phone, the victim told him that four black males had just jumped her and they were running towards his home. At this point, the victim’s friend looked out the window and, sure enough, observed four black males running by his house. At this point, the victim’s friend exited his home and observed the four suspects, now stopped, going through her bag. When the victim’s friend approached the suspects, he was able to detain two of the suspects until police arrived. Once on scene, officers arrested two 15 year-old males from Boston and charged both with Unarmed Robbery. A search of the area enabled officers to locate the victim’s bag, umbrella and wallet. OUT-OF-CONTROL DRIVER ARRESTED DOWNTOWN At about 12:13am, on Friday, September 12, 2008, officers from Area A-1 (Downtown) were on patrol in the downtown area when they observed a gray motor vehicle run a red light at the intersection of New Chardon and Merrimac Streets. As a result of their observations, officers immediately activated their emergency equipment (lights & sirens) in an effort to stop the motor vehicle. However, instead of stopping, the motor vehicle continued to travel along New Chardon Street. The suspect vehicle then turned on to and continued on Surface Road all the while ignoring officer’s attempts to stop the car. While traveling along Surface Road, the motor vehicle eventually got caught up in traffic in the area of Surface Road and North Street. Seeing that the suspect motor vehicle had no means of escape, officers exited their cruiser and approached the car. Upon reaching the suspect motor vehicle, officers ordered the suspect to turn off the engine. When the operator refused yet another lawful instruction, officers reached into the motor vehicle and removed the keys from the ignition. With the car stopped, officers arrested Dawn Bennett, 32, of Waltham and charged her with Refusal to Submit to a Police Officer, Driving to Endanger, Leaving the Scene of an Accident (Property Damage) and Speeding. While officers were handling the above situation, a motorist pulled over and approached the officers. According to the motorist, the suspect vehicle had struck his car earlier and took off. According to the victim, the accident took place in the area of Cambridge Street. Officers observed damage to the victim’s motor vehicle.
