DOOR KNOCKING IS ONE THING .. DOOR KICKING IS ANOTHER: TAKE IAt about 1:30am, on Saturday, February 14, 2009, officers from Area B-2 (Roxbury) were on patrol when they observed a white male attempting to kick in a front door in the area of 128 Calumet Street. Upon approaching the suspect, officers detected and observed that the suspect appeared to be under the influence of alcohol given the smell or odor of alcohol emanating from his person, his slurred speech and unsteady movements. When asked to explain why he was attempting to kick in the door, the suspect told officers that he didn’t need to answer any questions. When asked to provide some form of identification, the suspect pulled out an ID, but then refused to hand it over to the officers. After refusing to identify who he was, officers arrested Andrew Afronti, 22, of Boston and charged him with the Willful & Malicious Destruction of Property, Being Disorderly and Resisting Arrest. DOOR KICKING IS ANOTHER: TAKE II At about 11:30am, on Thursday, February 13, 2009, officers from Area A-7 (East Boston) were on patrol in the area of 28 Falcon Street when they observed a suspicious male duck into an alley. Given that the area had been the scene or location of several breaks, officers exited their cruiser in order to further investigate the situation. While approaching the alley, officers heard several loud knocks or bangs. When officers looked into the alley, officers observed the suspect attempting to kick in a door. As officers approached, the suspect, upon seeing the officers, took off on foot. After a lengthy foot pursuit, one that led officers over several fences, the suspect was apprehended. A search of the suspect enabled officers to locate and take possession of a pair of pliers. Officers arrested Luis Mercado, 34, of Boston and charged him with Breaking & Entering a Residence (Daytime). POLICE ARREST ONE FOR GUN POSSESSION IN THE SOUTH END At about 1:33am, on Saturday, February 14, 2009, officers from Area D-4 (South End) responded to a radio call for a suspicious person ringing doorbells inside an apartment building at 108 Gainsborough Street. On arrival, officers located the suspect. When asked to explain his actions, the suspect stated that he was attempting to gain access to a friend’s apartment. According to the suspect, he had been visiting with his friend earlier in the evening, but when he left, he left his cell phone in his friend’s place. Suspect further stated that he was ringing the bell because he thought his friend was asleep inside the apartment. While talking to the suspect, officers noticed the suspect begin to get distracted and anxious. Officers noted that the suspect kept motioning towards his pocket in such a way as to suggest he may be in possession of a weapon. When officers asked the suspect if he had any weapons, the suspect stated that he had a knife. When asked if he was in possession of anything else, the suspect quickly stepped away from the officers and took off on foot. While officers were pursuing the suspect on foot, officers observed the suspect repeatedly clutch and grab at an object in his waist area. In short time, officers observed the suspect discard a metal object. When the object hit the ground, officers heard the object make the sound consistent with metal hitting the sidewalk. Officers observed and recovered the object, which proved to be a black firearm. Officers continued to chase the suspect as the suspect fled into the Our House Pub on . When officers entered the establishment, employees of the establishment quickly directed officers to a rear entrance. Upon exiting the rear entrance, officers located the suspect hiding underneath a motor vehicle. While officers were searching the suspect, the suspect stated, “I got nothing else on me. All I had was the 22.” A search of the suspect enabled officers to locate and seize several small plastic bags containing Class D Drugs (marijuana) and several pills. Officers arrested Steve Hamilton, 28, of Brookline and charged him with the Unlawful Possession of a Firearm and Possession with Intent to Distribute Class B and D Drugs.
