Robbery Suspect Detained by Good Samaritans until Police Arrival

Last night around 6:05PM, officers from District D-4 (South End) responded to the intersection of Boylston St. and Massachusetts Ave. for a robbery in progress.

While en route, officers were advised that the suspect was possibly being detained by witnesses. Officers, on arrival, observed the suspect being held by two witnesses who were preventing him from leaving the scene. Officers handcuffed the suspect and then spoke to the victim.

The witness reported to officers that she was walking near the intersection of Mass. Ave. and Newbury St. when the suspect approached her from behind and snatched her phone from her and then took off.  The victim pursued the suspect all the while yelling, “Stop him! He stole my phone!” Two passersby heard the victim and chased the suspect and caught him in front of 1090 Boylston Street where they held him until police arrival but not without a physical struggle. The victim’s phone was taken from the suspect and returned to the victim.

The suspect, Ivan Arana, 40, of South Boston was arrested and charged with Unarmed Robbery.
