Media Alert: Mayor Menino and Boston Police Department Honor 1st African American Officer

 WHO:             Mayor Thomas Menino, Boston Police Commissioner Edward Davis, members of the Boston Police Department and family of honored officer, Sgt. Horatio Homer

WHAT:           Mayor Menino and Police Commissioner Davis along with the Boston Police Department will dedicate a gravestone that recognizes the service of Sergeant Horatio J. Homer, the first African American Police Officer in Boston.

WHEN:           Saturday, June 26th at 10:00 a.m.

WHERE:        The Evergreen Cemetery, 2060 Commonwealth Avenue in Brighton

INFO:             Horatio J. Homer was appointed to the Boston Police Department on December 24, 1878. He was promoted to Sergeant in 1895 and retired in January 29, 1919 after serving over 40 years. Descendants of Homer, Lydia Homer and members of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Regiment, Company A will participate in the dedication.
