Smoking in a Park Leads to Arrest for Assault

At about 8:22 p.m. on July 10th, 2010, officers from District B-2 (Roxbury) responded to a call for a person with a knife at 205 Roxbury Street.  On arrival, officers observed a male sitting on a bench inside the basketball court. The male yelled out, “You are here for me.” The officers saw that he had a white t-shirt wrapped around his head that was the same white tank top that the caller described in the suspect description, which was provided to the 911 operator. The suspect then stated that he had a knife in his pocket. The officers observed a folding knife clipped to his pants pocket.

Officers removed the knife from the suspect and then observed that there was blood on the shirt belonging to the suspect. The officers asked if he was injured and he stated that he had a cut on the back of his head. The officers could not see the cut through his hair and there was no blood observed on his head. The suspect was asked if he wanted medical attention but he refused.

The victim then arrived on the scene and identified himself to the officers. The victim stated that the suspect was yelling obscenities toward him and several younger children that were playing close by in the area. The victim stated that he told the suspect not to smoke marijuana near the children that were playing which then started the altercation. The victim then became more agitated and started to chase the suspect around a vehicle. The suspect then took the knife from his pocket and waved it towards the victim in a threatening manner. That is when the victim called the police in fear that the suspect would attack him with the knife. The victim then said the he observed the suspect fall back as he was yelling and hit his head. The victim also stated that he was familiar with the suspect from seeing him around.

The victim was shown the knife that the officers took from the suspect which was a grey folding knife which was positively identified by the victim as the one used in the attack. The knife was seized as evidence and the suspect, Abdisamad I. Yasin, 23, of Dorchester was placed in custody and charged with Assault with a Dangerous Weapon.
