Last night around 6:24PM, officers from District E-13 (Jamaica Plain) responded to the area of Columbus Ave. and Walnut Str. in response to a call of a man abusing a dog.
On arrival, officers spoke to a witness who reported that the suspect, who was now walking down the street, had been observed hitting, punching and kicking the dog. Officers traveled down the street a short distance and stopped the suspect who was walking the dog on a leash. Officers stopped the suspect and had him tie up his dog while they further investigated. Officers asked the suspect his name and he provided offices with a name that was not consistent with the information he had supplied officers when checked on computer in the police cruiser. After several attempts, officers were able to determine the suspect’s identity and discovered that he had several outstanding warrants including one for parole violation. Once officers discovered the suspect’s name, he took off running exclaiming, “You’re not taking me!” The suspect was apprehended after a short pursuit and placed under arrest.
The suspect, Darryl Tavares, 47 of Roxbury was arrested and charged with Cruelty to Animals, and Disorderly Conduct, warrants for Breaking and Entering and Larceny Over.
