Nicotine Craving Lands Suspect in Jail

This morning around 1:12AM, officers from District D-4 (South End) arrested suspect, Timothy D. Gayhart, 24, of East Boston and charged him with Shoplifting.

Officers were on patrol when they were flagged down by a witness pointed to the suspect  who was running down Boylston Street and stated that he had just robbed the his store/Tedeschi. Officers pursued the suspect and after a brief foot chase caught the suspect at Dartmouth St. and St. James Street. Once stopped the suspect stated to officers, “I know it was stupid, I took the cigarettes.”  The suspect was placed in handcuffs and searched incident to arrest and three packs of cigarettes were recovered from his pocket.

Officers returned to the victim/witness’ location and there learned that the suspect had walked into the store and asked for three packs of cigarettes, which were placed on the counter. The suspect then grabbed the cigarettes and ran out of the store without paying for them.  The suspect was placed under and transported to the district station and charged with the above offense, Shoplifting.
