Up in Smoke!

Last night around 10:10PM, officers from District E-13 (Jamaica Plain) arrested suspect, Avismael Mercado, 24 of Roslindale and charged him with Operating a Motor Vehicle after License Revocation, Refusal to Submit to Officers and Assault and Battery on a Police Officer.

Officers were traveling on Washington St.  when they noticed a cloud of white smoke in the area of 3552 Washington Street causing cars traveling on that street to come to a stop due to lack of visibility. Officers pulled to the side of the road and shortly after doing so, observed several ‘low rider’ cars in a nearby lot and smelled burnt car tires. Shortly after making note of this, officers observed one of these cars pull out of the lot at a high rate of speed, screeching its tires with smoke coming from the rear of the car.

Officers followed the car as it sped out of the driveway of this lot and saw it turn off of Washington St. to Burnett Street. There, the operator quickly exited the car and attempted to walk away from his car despite officers orders to stay in the car.  The suspect ignored officers’ orders and instead proceeded into a nearby back yard and attempted to flee from officers. Officers pursued the suspect and once they caught up to him, attempted to stop him from climbing the fence. The suspect pushed officers in an attempt to escape and it took some time before officers could gain control of the suspect.

Once placed under arrest, officers determined that the suspect had a revoked license and consequently was appropriately charged with the above offenses.
