At about 3:30pm, on Wednesday, April 20, 2011, officers from Area A-7 (East Boston) were on patrol when they observed an individual breaking into a car in the area of 1100 Bennington Street. Specifically, officers observed the suspect pulling on door handles as he walked along the street. Officers then observed the suspect gain entry into a vehicle. Upon seeing this, officers activated their emergency equipment (lights & sirens) and approached the suspect who was inside the car. Upon seeing the officers, the suspect attempted to flee on foot. After a brief foot pursuit, officers were able to apprehend the suspect. Officers arrested Robert Batchelder, 43, of Winthrop and charged him with Breaking & Entering a Motor Vehicle. A search of the suspect enabled officers to take possession of a hammer, rubber gloves, wire cutters and a prying tool.
