Boston Police Arrest One Suspect and Summons Another for Public Drinking

At about 12:05pm on Thursday, January 2, 2014, officers from District B-2 (Roxbury) were on patrol in the area of the Dudley Triangle, in response to community complaints of quality of life violations such as drinking in public, trespassing, and loitering.

While on patrol officers observed a male drinking a beverage from a brown paper bag. As officers approached the suspect they observed the top of a Budweiser Beer can, sticking out from the top of the bag. Officer confirmed the suspect was drinking from an open 12oz Budweiser Beer.  Officers informed the suspect he would receive a summons to Roxbury District Court for Drinking Alcoholic Beverage in Public.

A short time later at 12:20pm, officers observed a male suspect exit ‘Dearborn Liquors’, located at the intersection of Dearborn and Dudley Streets, with an unknown beverage in a brown paper bag.  Officers could see the top of a can with a red top that snaps the can open, consistent with a Budweiser beer can. The male suspect opened the can and took a drink. Officers approached the suspect and recovered an open can of Budweiser half-full, still cold to the touch, in the paper bag. The suspect Michael L. Sumpter, 50, of Dorchester, was placed under arrest and charged with Drinking Alcoholic Beverage in Public. Sumpter is expected to appear in Roxbury District Court.
