One Less Gun: Officers Arrest One and Recover Illegal Firearm in Roxbury

At about 12:44 AM on Wednesday, October 1, 2014, members of the Youth Violence Strike Force made an onsite arrest and recovered an illegal firearm in the area of Highland Street and Marcella Street in Roxbury.

While on patrol in the area of the above location, officers observed a motor vehicle operating with only one headlight illuminated. Officers activated their emergency equipment in an effort to initiate a traffic stop. Upon seeing officers’ lights and hearing the sirens, the operator of the motor vehicle immediately accelerate at an unreasonably high speed for a residential area and began to flee. Officers gave chase upon observing the vehicle passing through several stop signs without stopping. After taking a sharp left turn onto Fulda Street the operator lost control of the vehicle slamming into multiple parked cars, officers began to approach the car. At this time, the operator refused to remove his foot from the accelerator, nearly striking officers numerous times with his vehicle. Officers were eventually able to remove the suspect via the driver’s side window and place him under arrest. A motor vehicle inventory allowed officers to recover a silver Lorcin model L22 .22 caliber automatic firearm.

Officers arrested 21-year-old Anthony Govan of Jamaica Plain and charged him with Unlawful Possession of Firearm, Driving to Endanger, Operating Under the Influence of Alcohol, Use without Authority.
