One Less Gun: Officers Arrest One and Recover Two Illegal Firearms in South Boston

At about 5:00 PM, Wednesday, May 14, 2014 officers assigned to the District C-6 (South Boston) Drug Control Unit made an onsite arrest in the area of 71 B. St. in South Boston.

While conducting an ongoing drug investigation in the area of Joyce Hayes Way and Flaherty Way, officers were alerted to a black male wearing all black. Upon seeing officers, the individual immediately fled the area jumping over a cement wall. As the suspect jumped over the wall, officers pursuing him heard an object hit the ground and a gunshot went off. The suspect continued his escape to the area of 71 B. St. As officers entered the building, they were directed to one of the apartments. Officers knocked on the door and the suspect’s mother answered after approximately 10 minutes. As officers spoke with the suspect, he stated that he had been running from officers and that when he jumped over the wall, the gun went off. Officers placed the suspect under arrest. A canvas of the area enabled officers to locate and recover a loaded firearm. The apartment was frozen pending a search warrant.

At about 1:37 AM, officers returned to the above location and executed a search warrant of the residence. Upon making entry, officers were able to locate a black Hi-Point Assault Rifle, an extended ammunition clip as well as narcotics. 

Officers arrested Lovant Wheeler, 18, of South Boston. Wheeler is charged with Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Firearm Discharged within 500 ft. of a Dwelling, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition. As a result of the search warrant, Wheeler faces additional charges of Possession of Class D Drugs with Intent to Distribute, Possession of a Large Capacity Firearm, Possession of a Large Cpacity Feeding Device, Improperly Storing a Large Capacity Firearm and Receiving Stolen Property over $250.
