One Less Gun: One Arrested and One Illegal Gun Seized in Dorchester

At approximately 9:30am, Thursday May 8, 2014 members of the Boston Police Youth Violence Strike Force while conducting an investigation on Washington Street in the Codman Square area (Dorchester, Area C11) observed a suspect holding a black backpack enter the passenger side of a motor vehicle. At that time, the vehicle was monitored and observed failing to stop for a red light on Washington Street.  Officers conducted a motor vehicle stop on Washington Street at Lyndhurst Street. Officers approached the vehicle and observed through the open passenger side window a black backpack at the feet of the suspect. Officer then observed suspect using his heels in an attempt to kick the backpack under his seat. The suspect was asked to exit the vehicle in order to conduct a pat-frisk for officer safety. Subsequently, the backpack contained a handgun and the suspect was placed under arrest. The firearm was found to be loaded with a total of eight live rounds of 9mm ammunition. 

Dequann Whyte, 22, of Dorchester to be charged as follows: Unlawful Carrying of a Firearm  Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, Unlawful Carrying of a Loaded Firearm on a Public Way,  Unlawful Carrying of a Firearm (3rd Subsequent Offense), Receiving Stolen Property, Armed Career Criminal-Level 1.  The operator of the motor vehicle will be issued a Massachusetts Uniform Citation for Failure to Stop (Red Light).
