Police Officers Honored & Remembered at today’s Police Memorial Mass

On a day set aside by statute for the specific purpose of honoring and remembering deceased members of the Boston Police Department, today, Sunday, June 1, 2014, Boston Police Commissioner William Evans, Boston Police Relief Association President John Sullivan and members of the Boston Police Department’s Honor Guard & Gaelic Column gathered at the Mount Hope Cemetery on Walk Hill Street in Mattapan to celebrate Police Memorial Sunday. A Mass honoring deceased members of the department was said and celebrated by Department Chaplain Reverend John J. Connolly. Following the Mass, Grand Rabbi Yitzchok A. Korff and Reverend Gary Adams celebrated an ecumenical service. After the service, the ‘Reading of the Roll’ in which the names of all the officers who were lost or passed away this past year was read by Chief William Gross. This year’s Reading of the Roll included the names of 46 members of the department including that of Officer Dennis Simmonds who passed away this past April. Said Commissioner Evans, “Today is about honoring and never forgetting the sacrifices of all those who came before us. When I look at the names of the officers we lost this year, I feel a tremendous level of gratitude. Those we remember today, not only served our city with honor and courage, but they also showed and taught so many of us how to do this job. And, it is only fitting that we gather here today to honor, remember and thank them for their service.”
