Special Moment for a Retired Superintendent and his Recruit Officer Grandson During the Graduation of Class 53-13

On Wednesday, June 18, 2014, the Boston Police Department proudly graduated 56 Boston Police Officers from the Boston Police Academy. The ceremony, which took place at Roxbury Community College, featured many special moments but few more special than the pinning of Recruit Officer Stephen Shields. Officer Shields was pinned by his grandfather, retired Boston Police Superintendent Paul Russell. However, due to mobility issues, Superintendent Russell was unable to ascend the stairs that would’ve allowed him to join his grandson on stage. So, instead, Mayor Walsh, Commissioner Evans and Recruit Officer Shields descended the stairs to enable Superintendent Russell to partake in and share in the pinning of his grandson. Great moment.
