As the nation remembers D-Day, the Boston Police Department salutes the generation of police officers who earned their stripes in World War II and then returned to stand watch on the streets of Boston. Among these was Joseph W. Gambino who parachuted into Normandy with the 101st Airborne, the Screaming Eagles. Gambino earned a Purple Heart later in the war. He joined the BPD in 1947 and served in Dorchester for much of his career, earning many commendations. These men were truly the greatest generation.
