At about 12:48 AM on Saturday, July 4, 2014, officers from District D-4 (South End) recovered an illegal firearm during a traffic stop in the area of 447 Shawmut Avenue.

While officers patrolled West Newton Street in the area of O'Day Playground, they observed a vehicle speeding.  Officers activated their emergency equipment (lights and sirens) and initiated a stop of the black Chrysler 300 outside of 447 Shawmut Avenue. Officers approached the driver's side of the vehicle to make contact with the male operator and immediately observed a spent shell casing in the middle of the folded down back seats.  For officer safety, the driver and a male passenger were removed from the vehicle and detained. Upon further investigation, officers were able to recover a loaded black Taurus Millennium .40 caliber handgun from the floor of the vehicle.

Angel Rivera, 34, of Roxbury was arrested and charged with Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition and issued a MA uniform citation for Speeding.  The male passenger was identified and released.
