One Less Gun: Investigation Leads Officers to Arrest One and Recover One Illegal Firearm in East Boston

At about 11:20 AM on Wednesday, August 20, 2014, members of the Drug Control Unit in District A-7 (East Boston) affected an onsite arrest of a suspect for drug and firearm related charges in the area of Maverick Square.

After extensive surveillance of several individuals known to police officers for their involvement in street level drug activity, officers witnessed what appeared to be a hand-to-hand drug transaction and conducted a stop of the suspects. Due to the movements of one suspect, officers believed the individual may be in possession of a weapon and performed a pat frisk. The frisk allowed officers to recover a loaded black Ruger 380 Model LCP in the suspect’s waistband. The suspect could not produce a license to carry the firearm, and further investigation revealed that the firearm had been reported stolen out of South Carolina.

An additional search of the suspect yielded several plastic bags of heroin and cocaine packaged in a manner consistent with drug distribution, as well as several cell phones and a large amount of cash.

Officers arrested 21-year-old Pedro D. Benitiz of Malden for Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, Carrying a Loaded Firearm, Carrying a Loaded Firearm While in Commission of a Felony, Possession with Intent to Distribute Class A Substance (2nd & Subsequent), Possession with Intent to Distribute Class B Substance(2nd & Subsequent), Possession with Intent to Distribute Class A Substance (100’ Park Zone), Possession with Intent to Distribute Class B Substance (100’ Park Zone), Armed Career Criminal Level III, and Receiving Stolen Property.
