One Less Gun: BPD Officers Arrest One and Recover an Illegal Gun in South Boston

At about 3:00am, on Saturday, August 23, 2014, officers from District C-6 (South End) received a radio call for a person with a gun outside of 77 W. 7th Street. On arrival, officers were informed that two males had been arguing and raising voices outside of the above mentioned address and one of the males was seen with a firearm in his hand. The two individuals were last seen walking towards D Street while pushing a red scooter. Officers quickly responded to the area and, in short time, observed a male engaged in a conversation with a female and a red scooter parked on the sidewalk. When asked about the scooter, the individual stated that it did not belong to him. Additional officers observed a second male, matching the witnesses’ description, sitting on a bench in front of 88 West 7th Street. As officers approached the male, he quickly got up and attempted to walk away. Officers stopped the male and, during their encounter, observed and recovered a dark colored revolver laying in close proximity to where the suspect had been sitting.

The male suspect, Dion Smith, 24, of Dorchester was placed under arrest and charged with Unlawful Possession of a Firearm and Unlawful Possession of Ammunition.

The scooter, which belonged to the suspect, was towed from the area for safe keeping.
