Daily Dose of Great Police Work: Keyless Motor Scooter Lands One Suspect Behind Bars

At about 10:05pm, on Monday, September 15, 2014, officers from District B-3 (Mattapan) were on patrol in the area of Blue Hill Ave & Esmond Street when they observed an individual operating a motor scooter on the wrong side of the road. Officers activated their emergency equipment (lights & sirens) and stopped the scooter. While talking to the operator, officers noted that, although the scooter remained running, there was no key in the ignition. Officers also noted that the ignition appeared to have been altered or damaged. When asked to explain how he was able to start the scooter without a key, the suspect couldn’t provide a credible explanation. When asked to display a valid driver’s license, the suspect stated that his license was expired. When asked to produce paperwork showing that the scooter belonged to him, the suspect was unable to.

Officers arrested and charged Jose Ortiz, 28, of Boston and charged him with Receiving a Stolen Motor Vehicle (Scooter) and Operating with an Expired License.
