One Less Gun: Continuing Efforts to Combat Gun Violence Enable BPD Officers to Arrest Two and Recover Two Firearms in a Span of Less Than Three Hours in Two Separate Incidents

Incident #1: At about 6:55 PM on Tuesday, January 13, 2015, officers from District C-11 (Dorchester) made an onsite arrest for firearm-related offenses in the area of Westwood & Wilrose Streets in Dorchester. While on patrol, officers received a call for shots fired in the area of Laredo & Intervale Streets. Officers in the area observed three males walking nearby and conducted a stop to inquire if they could provide any information relative to the incident. While two males paused to speak with officers, the third male continued to walk away holding and clutching at his waistband in such a way as if to suggest he may be in possession of a weapon. When officers made a second attempt to engage the individual, the male suspect took off on foot. During the chase, officers observed the suspect discard a firearm from his waistband. The firearm was recovered and the suspect eventually stopped and apprehended. Officers recovered a loaded black 9MM Luger Hi Point handgun along the suspect’s flight path.

Officers arrested and charged Kaivon Blake, 18, of Roxbury for the Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition and Carrying a Loaded Firearm.

Incident #2: Less than three hours later, at about 9:40 PM on Tuesday, January 13, 2015, members of the Youth Violence Strike Force made an onsite arrest for firearm and drug-related offenses in the area of the Orchard Park Housing Development in Roxbury. While on patrol, officers observed an individual who, upon seeing the officers, quickened his pace as if trying to inconspicuously evade and escape the officers. When the officers pulled alongside the individual, he approached the car and, unprompted, engaged the officers in conversation. After a brief exchange, the officer noticed the individual tightly clutching a large, heavy object in his jacket pocket. Fearing the presence of a weapon, the officer exited the vehicle to perform a pat frisk. At this time, the suspect fled from the officers on foot. After a brief foot pursuit, one in which the suspect literally lost both of his shoes running away from the officers, the suspect was apprehended and a firearm (a loaded Darnes Des Pyrenees Unique Model D2 semi-automatic firearm) later recovered when officers retraced the steps taken by the suspect in his attempt to elude being arrested. Officers also found marijuana packaged for sale on the suspect.

26 year-old Jerome Smith of Boston was arrested and charged with the Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of a Firearm (Subsequent Offense), Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, Carrying a Loaded Firearm and Possession with Intent to Distribute a Class D Drug.
