One Less Gun: Officers Arrest Two, Recover Loaded Firearm After Traffic Stop in Dorchester

At about 11:49 PM on Friday October 30, 2015, officers assigned to the Youth Violence Strike Force arrested two suspects on numerous firearm charges after a traffic stop in the area of Columbia Road and Pasadena Road in Dorchester.  Officers were in the area on directed patrol in response to several recent incidents involving gun and gang activity.  Officers observed a motor vehicle with an expired inspection sticker and stopped the car to inform the operator, later identified as Joseph Lopez, 24, of Quincy, of the infraction.  As officers were speaking with the driver, they recognized the passenger, Elias Dias, 21, of Roxbury, from a prior firearm arrest which had ended in a violent struggle.  When officers learned that the passenger, Diaz, was wanted on an outstanding warrant, they removed him from the car, placing him in custody without incident.  Officers then performed a pat frisk of the passenger area of the vehicle and recovered a loaded Daewoo Model D440 MKII .40 caliber firearm.  The driver and passenger denied ownership of the weapon and consequently, the driver was also placed in custody without incident.  Both men will appear in Dorchester District Court on charges of Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of a Loaded Firearm and Unlawful Possession of Ammunition.
