One Less Gun: Officers Recover Firearm, Arrest Two After Traffic Stop in Roxbury

At about 10:00 PM on Tuesday November 24, 2015, officers assigned to the Youth Violent Strike Force made an onsite firearm arrest in the area of Washington and Ball Streets in District D-4 (South End).

Officers observed a stopped motor vehicle on Washington Street with the engine running and the operator slumped over the steering wheel.  Officers approached the vehicle out of concern for the driver’s well-being. Officers spoke to the operator who could not produce a license to operate a motor vehicle. The operator was queried and identified as 21 year-old Miguel Pena of Milton, also revealing his license to operate a motor vehicle was revoked.

Before placing Pena under arrest, officers were required to perform a motor vehicle inventory search and requested that all passengers exit the car.  It was at this time the officers discovered a loaded Glock Model 31 .357 handgun under the front seat of the passenger side of the vehicle. The firearm was positioned as it had placed it under the seat by the front seat passenger.

The front seat passenger produced a Massachusetts ID identifying him as 25 year-old Steven Gonzalez of Boston.  When Gonzalez could not produce a license to carry a firearm, he was placed under arrest and charged with Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, Carrying a loaded Firearm, Possession of a High Capacity Feeding Device, and Armed Career Criminal.  Pena was placed under arrest and charged with Operating after Suspension.   Both men have been arraigned at Roxbury District Court.
