One Less Gun: Drug Investigations Lead to the Recovery of Two Illegal Firearms and Arrest of Two Suspects

INCIDENT #1: At about 10:20 AM on Wednesday, December 30, 2015, members of the Special Investigations Unit conducted a drug investigation in the area of 10 Huntington Avenue at the Westin Hotel.

Prior to the investigation, officers received a description of two males that were selling heroin from inside the above location. Officers set up surveillance inside and outside the hotel and shortly observed a vehicle pull up to the valet. The three occupants of the vehicle had many physical attributes of drug abusers and none were carrying any luggage. Officers observed the individuals valet their car, enter the hotel, and take the elevator to an unknown floor. Fifteen minutes later, the three exited the hotel, retrieved their vehicle, and drove away. Officers stopped the vehicle a few blocks away, and further investigation revealed that the occupants had purchased 5.4 grams of what appeared to be heroin. Officers will seek complaints against the individuals in court.

Continued surveillance of the hotel soon allowed officers to observe two individuals fitting the description given prior to the investigation. Officers observed the suspects exit the hotel and walk on Dartmouth Street towards Columbus Avenue, continually scanning the area as if concerned that they were being followed. As the suspects approached Tremont Street, officers approached to conduct an inquiry. The first male, identified as 23-year-old male Wendy Joseph of Waltham, was found in possession of one medium plastic bag and 18 smaller plastic bags of what appeared to be heroin in addition to over $1700 in US currency. Also found in his possession was a loaded Jennings .22 caliber firearm. His accomplice was found in possession of 4 plastic bags of suspected heroin, and officers will seek complaints against him in court.

Joseph was arrested and charged with Trafficking Class A Drugs (28-99 grams), Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, Carrying a Loaded Firearm, and Possession of a Firearm with Altered/Obliterated Serial Number. Joseph will be arraigned at Boston Municipal Court.

INCIDENT #2: At about 7:10 PM on Wednesday, December 30, 2015, officers from District A-1 (Downtown) made an on-site arrest for drug related charges in the area of Downtown Convenience Store at 40 Boylston Street.

While on patrol in the above area, officers observed one female and two males loitering inside the convenience store where “No Trespassing” is clearly posted. Officers spoke with the individuals and determined they had no legitimate purpose for being in the store. During the conversation, the officers observed the female fidgeting in her pockets attempting to adjust something in her pants, and despite several requests for her to remove her hands from her pockets, she refused to comply. Officers conducted a pat frisk of the female for their safety during which they discovered 8 individually wrapped bags of what appeared to be crack cocaine. Officers arrested the female, and after a more thorough search of the suspect, officers recovered a loaded black Kel-Tec .40 caliber firearm from her pants, as well as over $200 in US currency.

Officers arrested 25-year-old female Ayanna Thorpe from Mattapan and charged her with Trespassing, Possession with Intent to Distribute Class B Drugs (Cocaine), Possession wiht Intent to Distribute (School Zone), Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of a High Capacity Firearm and Feeding Device, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, and Carrying a Loaded Firearm.
