Daily Dose of Great Police Work: BPD Officers Catch Armed Robber and Recover Property, Drugs in Jamaica Plain


At about 8:00 PM on Sunday, February 22, 2015, officers from District E-13 (Jamaica Plain) responded to a radio call for an armed robbery in the area of 280 Hyde Park Avenue.

Upon arrival, officers spoke with the victims who stated that two unknown males entered their residence, displayed a handgun, and ordered everyone to the ground. The suspects then ordered the victims to hand over their valuables. The suspects stole the victims’ wrist watches, cell phones, and several hundred dollars in cash. When the suspects fled on foot, the victims gave chase until they were fired upon by the suspects.

Officers broadcast the descriptions of the suspects over their police radio. Officers in the area observed an individual fitting one of the suspect’s description and conducted an inquiry. While performing the stop, officers observed the victims’ stolen property in a snowbank nearby, as well as a number of plastic bags containing illegal narcotics, including substances believed to be heroin, cocaine, and oxycodone pills. Ballistic evidence was also recovered a short distance from where shots were fired.

The suspect, 21-year-old John Rosa of Dorchester, was arrested and charged with Armed Robbery, Armed Assault in a Dwelling, Assault and Battery by means of a Dangerous Weapon, Trafficking Class A Substance (Heroin), Possession with Intent to Distribute Class B Substance (Cocaine, Oxycodone), and Unlawful Possession of Ammunition. During the booking process, officers also recovered from the suspect: additional stolen property belonging to the victims, a green leafy substance believed to be marijuana, and over $4500 in US currency. Rosa was additionally charged with Possession with Intent to Distribute Class D Substance (Marijuana).
