Keeping Boston Safe: BPD Officers Run Down Gun Wielding Suspect in Mattapan: At about 1:10am, on Saturday, March 21, 2015, officers from District B-3 (Mattapan) were travelling in the area of Woodrow & Ballou Avenues when a check of the registration on the car travelling in front of them revealed that the vehicle had been reported stolen. Since the officers were operating an unmarked cruiser, they called for a marked police cruiser to assist them in their efforts to stop the vehicle. While awaiting back-up, officers continued surveillance of the vehicle. While travelling behind it, officers observed the vehicle come to an abrupt stop with the operator of the car quickly exiting the car. When the operator exited the car, officers quickly observed him clutching at this waist area in such a way as if to suggest he was in possession of a weapon. When the suspect took off on foot, officers gave chase. While running behind the suspect, officers observed him grabbing and clutching at his waist area in such a way as if to indicate the presence of a firearm. At one point, the suspect tripped and fell, and when he did, officers observed a black firearm fall to the ground. As officers moved in, the suspect regained his balance, grabbed the gun and kept on running in an effort to evade the officers. However, in short time, the suspect fell a second time and, again, lost possession of the firearm. This time, officers were able to subdue the suspect before he could make a move to regain possession of the gun.

Officers arrested Shamallah Jones, 19, of Dorchester and charged him with the Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition and Carrying a Loaded Firearm on a Public Way.

Meanwhile, in the suspect’s haste to exit the vehicle, he neglected to put the car in park. As such, the car continued rolling and sideswiped one vehicle until an officer was able to jump into the car and bring it to a stop. Given the suspect’s failure to put the car in park and the resulting damage caused by the wayward car, the suspect was additionally charged with Leaving the Scene of an Accident Resulting in Property Damage.
