One Less Gun: Officers Prevent Potential Shooting & Recover Firearm

At about 12:50 PM on Thursday, March 26, 2015, members of the Youth Violence Strike Force conducted a stop of a group that resulted in a firearm arrest in the area of Dudley and Belden Streets in District B-2 (Roxbury).

While on patrol in the Dudley Street and Uphams Corner area, officers observed several young males yelling at an individual on the sidewalk. The officers’ attention was drawn to the individual who was yelling, “Get back!” while reaching into a backpack that he held in front of his body. Fearing that the male may be reaching for a weapon, officers ordered the individuals to show their hands. The male dropped the backpack and complied with the officers’ orders. All parties were momentarily detained while the officers frisked the individual and his backpack for their safety.

In the backpack, officers recovered a loaded black and tan Springfield Armory XD9 firearm. Officers arrested 23-year-old Arkeem Edwards for Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, Carrying a Loaded Firearm, and Unlawful Possession of a Large Capacity Feeding Device. During the booking process, officers recovered a plastic bag of a white powdered substance believed to be cocaine and a plastic bag of a green leafy substance believed to be marijuana. Edwards was additionally charged with Possession of Class B and Class D Drugs.
