On Sunday, March 8, 2015, officers from District A-7 (East Boston) responded to a radio call for a kidnapping in the area of Porter and Bennington Streets.
Upon arrival, officers spoke with the victim who stated he was returning from a nearby ATM when an unknown white male jumped in his motor vehicle with his 3-year-old son in the back seat. The victim attempted to pull the suspect out of the car to no avail, and the suspect fled in the vehicle. Boston operations broadcast the description of the suspect and the stolen motor vehicle to Boston police officers, as well as to surrounding police jurisdictions. The child was dropped off unharmed by the suspect a short time later at a Mobil gas station on Meridian Street in East Boston.
At about 7:50 AM today, Monday, March 9, 2015, officers received a radio call reporting that the vehicle had been sighted at 195 Putnam Street in East Boston. Officers responded to the scene and recovered and processed the stolen vehicle. Upon further investigation, officers were able to arrest 50-year-old Ronald Smoot of East Boston for Resisting Arrest, Failure to Stop for Police Officers, Operating After Suspended License, Speeding, and four outstanding default warrants.
