One Less Gun: Surveillance Allows DCU Officers to Recover Gun in Dorchester

File PHoto

At about 3:30 PM on Friday, May 29, 2015, members of the District C-11 (Dorchester) Drug Control Unit were notified of a suspicious vehicle in the area of Savin Hill.

DCU officers on patrol observed this vehicle and began surveillance on it. After watching the movements of the vehicle and its two occupants for a short time, officers observed behavior consistent with that of persons buying and selling illegal narcotics. Officers conducted a stop of the vehicle in the area of 368 Bowdoin Street and, after reading both occupants their Miranda Warnings, requested the operator’s driver’s license and registration. The operator reported to the officer that he did not have a driver’s license, and a short investigation revealed that his license was indeed suspended. Officers arrested 25-year-old James Hickey of Roxbury for Operating a Motor Vehicle with a Suspended/Revoked License.

Officers then spoke with the passenger of the vehicle and asked if he had anything in his possession that he should not have. The passenger replied he did not and consented to a search of the back pack he was holding between his legs. The search of the bag revealed a loaded black Ruger Model 23 .22 caliber firearm. Neither the passenger nor Hickey could produce a License to Carry.

The passenger, 49-year-old George Williams of Dorchester, was arrested and charged with Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, and Carrying a Loaded Firearm. Hickey was additionally charged with Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, and Operating after Suspension (3rd and Subsequent Offense).
