Members of the Boston Police Harbor Unit Foil Wannabe Pirates Looking to Loot Boats in Boston Harbor: At about 2:17pm, on Monday, July 20, 2015, officers assigned to the Boston Police Harbor Unit responded to a telephone call made to the Boston Police Harbor Unit Base from a person stating that there was a suspicious boat riding around the mooring field of the Boston Harbor Sailing Center. While en route to the call, officers received additional information about two individuals acting suspiciously and throwing items – including couch cushions – off of a 45 foot Hatteras sport fishing boat. While approaching the vessel, officers observed two males standing on the fly bridge of the vessel and a third individual floating away from the scene in a smaller boat. Officers promptly boarded the vessel and asked the men if they owned the boat. In response to that question, both men stated they didn’t know. While searching the boat, officers noted that vessel appeared to be in utter disarray. Specifically, officers observed the salon door to be open and personal items thrown and strewn about the cabin. In light of the suspect’s inability to show any proof of ownership relative to the vessle, officers placed both suspects under arrest. With the suspects in custody, officers made their way to Long Wharf in order to rendezvous with responding officers from District A-1 (Downtown) who would then transport the suspects to the downtown station. As for the third suspect who attempted to escape on a second boat, he was later picked up and apprehended with help from the US Coast Guard. Officers later determined that the boat used in suspect #3’s failed get-a-way was stolen. Moreover, suspect #3 was found to be in possession of several stolen items including: fishing rods, a tackle box, a fish finder, a chart plotter GPS, a marine radio, a solar cell phone charger and binoculars. All three suspects were taken into custody.
Officers arrested Dwayne Hill, 52, of Boston, Tony Villegas, 60, of Boston and Robert Allen, 25, of Boston and charged all three with Breaking & Entering (Ship), Trespassing, Receiving Stolen Property (Boat), Using without Authority (Boat) and the Willful Malicious & Destruction of Property.
