One Less Gun: Officers Recover Two Guns in Two Incidents within One Hour

At about 6:26 PM on Thursday, July 23, 2015, officers from District B-2 chased and arrested a Juvenile male for carrying a loaded gun in the rear of the Ellis School, 302 Walnut Avenue, Roxbury.

Officers on patrol observed a group of three males in the rear of 302 Walnut Avenue (Ellis School). This area is known to be frequented by trespassers and gang activity. As the officers approached the group, one male walked away from the officers down an alley close by. Upon seeing officers at the other end of the alley, the male suspect turned away from the officers and began to run towards the rear of the school. Officers gave chase and observed the male grabbing at his waistband while he was running. The male ran towards a ballfield and into the dugout area. There was a little league game in progress with players on the field and parents in the stands. Officers continued their foot pursuit of the suspect off the ballfield and onto a driveway leading to Crawford Street eventually catching up to the suspect in front of 134 Crawford Street. A Ballistic K-9, “Nico” was called to assist and after a brief search of the suspect’s path of flight located a loaded .9mm handgun in the rear of 130 Crawford Street. It was later learned that the recovered gun was reported stolen from Virginia Beach, VA.

The suspect, a male juvenile from Boston was arrested and charged with Delinquent to wit: unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, carrying a loaded firearm on a public way, trespassing and receiving stolen property. He will be arraigned in Boston Juvenile Court.

At about 7:26 PM on Thursday, July 23, 2015, officers from the Youth Violence Strike Force responded to a large fight in the area of 284 Centre Street, Jamaica Plain. During the incident, officers were able to recover a gun from one individual and an open knife from the pocket of another.

Officers were in the area in response to community complaints of recent criminal activity. While standing at the corner of Chestnut and Centre streets, officers were alerted by a citizen of a large fight outside 284 Centre Street. As the officers approached they observed multiple people fighting. Additional officers were called to assist.  As the combatants began to disperse, officers attention was drawn towards two individuals walking away screaming at one another. Officers tried to approach these two individuals however both refused to stop and quickly tried to elude officers. Officers observed one of the individuals reach into his pocket and attempt to pass an object to the other individual. Believing a weapon may be present the officers stopped these two individuals to conduct an inquiry and discovered a firearm in the pocket of one of the males. After the discovery of the gun by officers, the suspect began to resist and a violent struggle followed during which the suspect placed his hand in his pocket that contained the gun. Officers were able to safely remove the suspects hand from his pocket and retrieve a firearm from inside the pocket.

22-year-old Gerkiale Williams of Boston was arrested and charged with unlawfully carrying a firearm, resisting arrest, and affray. Williams was also wanted on outstanding warrants for assault and battery and disturbing a school assembly. During the incident officers also approached and arrested 54-year-old James Lewis of Boston. Lewis was one of the original combatants and was observed by officers putting an open and locked knife in his pocket. Lewis was charges with possession of a dangerous weapon and affray. Both suspects will be arraigned in Roxbury District Court.


The officers of the Boston Police Department have recovered and removed over 370 guns from city neighborhoods during 2015.
