BPD Officers Meet With Young Somalian Women to Share Stories and Smiles

On Tuesday August 25, 2015, officers from assignments across the city came together to take part in a coordinated gathering entitled Somalian Girls Dialogue.  The event was held at the Islamic Society of Boston Cultural Center in Roxbury and was put together by Youth Police Partnership which is a group with longstanding ties to the BPD.  Deputy Superintendent Nora Baston was among the 14 female officers on hand who met with 21 young Somalian women to discuss stereotypes and break down cultural barriers.  Deputy Baston found the conversations to be deeply personal, sometimes humorous but ultimately – meaningful:  “At the end of the work shop both the officers and youth leave wanting to continue the relationships.  Friendships are formed and lasting bonds between the police and youth are created.”
