One Less Gun: Officers Use Keen Observation to Interrupt Altercation, Arrest One and Recover Illegal Firearm

At about 2:30 PM on Monday, September 14, 2015, members of the Youth Violence Strike Force made an on-site arrest of a suspect for firearm related charges in the area of 29 Bethune Way in District B-2 (Roxbury).

While on patrol in the above area, the officers’ attention was drawn to two males walking a short distance from each other. The first male, wearing all black, continuously looked nervously behind him at the second male. The second male, wearing all gray, followed at a short distance with his hand pressed firmly in his right pant pocket as if holding an object. As officers monitored the interaction, a third male in red stared at the officers with his eyes open wide and discreetly pointed to the male in gray. The officers, fearing that they had come upon an altercation between the male in black and the male in gray, exited their vehicle and inquired whether the male in gray had a weapon. The male replied that he had a knife, but upon pat frisking the suspect, the officers found a black revolver with a white handle in his front right pocket.

The suspect, 21-year-old Hakeem Martin of Roxbury, was arrested and charged with Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, and Carrying a Loaded Firearm. Martin will be arraigned in Roxbury District Court.
