One Less Gun: Suspect in Custody After Loaded Firearm Recovered During Traffic Stop in Roxbury

Earlier today, at about 1:30 AM on Saturday October 8, 2016, officers assigned to the Youth Violence Strike Force made an onsite firearm arrest after performing a traffic stop in the area of 109 East Canton Street in Roxbury.  The officers were on patrol when their attention was drawn to a vehicle with no headlights on making a three point turn in an alleyway.  As the vehicle exited the alley onto the street, the officers observed and recognized the operator, Jorge Vega, 19, of Leominster, and were aware that he did not possess a valid driver’s license.  The officers stopped the car and placed the operator in custody without incident after confirming that he was unlicensed.  The officers then performed a standard motor vehicle inventory search prior to towing the vehicle which led to the recovery of a loaded .380 caliber Jimenez Arms JA380 handgun.  It was later revealed that the firearm had been reported stolen in Alabama in 2010.  The suspect will appear in Boston Municipal Court on charges of Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, Carrying a Loaded Firearm, Receiving Stolen Property and Operating a Motor Vehicle without a License.
