One Less Gun: Officers Recover Firearm during Motor Vehicle Stop in Roxbury

At about 6:20 PM on Friday, February 19, 2016, members of the Youth Violence Strike Force conducted a traffic stop in the area of Crawford and Hollander Streets in District B-2 (Roxbury).

While on patrol, officers observed a vehicle operating without its tail lights activated. Officers also observed that the vehicle’s registration had a revoked status, so they conducted a stop of the car in the above area. The officers informed the female operator that her registration was revoked and that they would have to tow the car. The female operator and male passenger exited the vehicle, so that officers could perform an inventory search of the vehicle. During the search, officers observed the handle of what appeared to be a black firearm inside of an open shopping bag. Officers recovered a loaded black .45 caliber Glock 21 firearm that had previously been reported stolen out of Bourne, MA.

Officers advised the operator and passenger of the vehicle of their Miranda rights and, after further investigation, placed the passenger, 30-year-old Kareem Smith of Boston, under arrest. Smith was charged with Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, Carrying a Loaded Firearm, Unlawful Possession of a Large Capacity Feeding Device, and Receiving Stolen Property.
