Great Work Recognized: Officers Receive Commendations at Recent Ceremony at Boston Police Headquarters

At a recent ceremony held at Boston Police Headquarters, two Boston Police Officers and a Boston University Police Officer were presented with commendations for their actions in the line of duty.

On Wednesday, November 25, 2015, at approximately 1:56 AM Officers Brian Lundy and Michael Paillant responded to reports of a person shot at Patron’s Night Club in the area of 138 Brighton Avenue.  These officers monitor this area on a nightly basis, particularly when nightclubs and bars are closing.  They discovered a victim suffering from a gunshot wound who reported that his friends had been involved in an altercation inside the establishment. The victim was leaving when he observed four to five men standing at the exit.  When he turned to retreat back inside, he heard about six gunshots and was struck in the right leg.

Meanwhile, Officer Lou Copponi of the Boston University Police, who was also in the area, heard the gunshots and observed two men run from the rear alley and enter a motor vehicle.  Officer Copponi radioed the vehicle description and direction of flight. Officers Lundy and Paillant quickly stopped the vehicle and conducted a pat‐frisk of the occupants and the vehicle.  No firearm was recovered.  They were joined by Officer Copponi who identified these subjects as the individuals he observed running from the scene of the shooting. Officers Lundy and Paillant completed a detailed administrative report documenting the stop.

Detectives began an investigation including a review video from the area, which revealed footage of the identified suspect throwing something on the roof of a nearby store.  Officers  were able to recover a .380 caliber handgun from the roof which was later revealed to match shell casings recovered from the scene.

Officers Lundy, Paillant and Copponi's swift response and knowledge of the area enabled them to stop the suspects.  Their detailed administrative reports were crucial to detectives in making identifications and ultimately the arrest of a suspect in this case. For their efforts they are each awarded a Commissioner’s Commendation.
