One Less Gun: Officers Recover Loaded Firearm, Arrest Juvenile After Foot Pursuit in Mattapan

At about 12:30 PM on Saturday, February 27, 2016, officers assigned to the Youth Violence Strike Force made an onsite firearm arrest in the area of Talbot Avenue and Westcott Street in Mattapan.  The officers were on directed patrol in response to recent gang activity when they observed a group of juvenile males who were known to them walking in the area.  As officers approached to speak with the group, their attention was drawn to one of them in particular, a 17 year old juvenile male, who was clutching at the waistband area of his pants.  One of the officers moved in close to perform a pat frisk and immediately felt what he believed to be a firearm.  As soon as he made contact with the metal object, the suspect tried to strike the officer with his elbow and began to run down Talbot Avenue while still clutching at his pants.  The officers gave chase and caught up to the suspect a short distance later.  The officers were able to place the suspect in custody after a violent struggle while recovering a loaded Ruger 9mm handgun from the front waistband area of his pants.  Officers also recovered a Stanley box cutter from the suspect.  The suspect will appear in Dorchester Juvenile Court on charges of Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition and Carrying a Loaded Firearm.
