Keeping Boston Safe: Two Traffic Stops Lead to the Recovery of Two Firearms, Three Arrests, During Two Separate Incidents Overnight in Dorchester

INCIDENT #1:  At about 11:00 PM on Wednesday, March 16, 2016, officers assigned to the City Wide Drug Control Unit made an onsite firearm arrest after conducting a traffic stop in the area of 178 Magnolia Street in Dorchester.  The officers were on directed patrol in the area when their attention was drawn to a motor vehicle which was operating in a suspicious manner.  Officers stopped the car after observing a traffic infraction.  When officers approached the driver, they observed a sawed-off shotgun in his lap.  Officers quickly grabbed the gun and removed the operator, Peter Sands, 51, of Dorchester, placing him in custody without incident.  It was later revealed that the shotgun was loaded.  The suspect will be arraigned in Roxbury District Court on charges of Possession of a Sawed-Off Shotgun, Carrying a Rifle of a Shotgun on a Public Way and Unlawful Possession of Ammunition.

INCIDENT #2:  At about 2:32 AM on Thursday, March 17, 2016, officers assigned to District B-2 (Roxbury) made arrested two suspects on firearm charges after making a traffic stop in the area of Hartford and Wayland Streets in Dorchester.  The officers were on patrol when they observed a motor vehicle commit a traffic infraction.  After pulling the car over and speaking with the occupants, the officers learned that the vehicle was a rental and that neither the operator nor the passenger had the authority to drive it.  Officers removed the driver, Michael Turner, 21, of Dorchester and the passenger Lauren Ugwunze, 25, of Dorchester and prepared to tow the motor vehicle.  Officers conducted a standard motor vehicle inventory search during which they recovered a loaded Cobra Model CA .380 caliber handgun in an area where the driver would have had access.  At this time, the driver was placed in custody without incident.  It was later revealed that the passenger was wanted on two outstanding warrants and she too was placed in custody without incident.  Ugunze will appear in Dorchester District Court on the previous two charges of Operating Under the Influence of Alcohol and Uttering or Publishing False Writings.  Turner will be arraigned in Roxbury District Court on charges of Unlawful Possession of a Firearm and Unlawful Possession of Ammunition and Using Without Authority.
