One Less Gun: Officers Make Arrest After Recovering Loaded Firearm During Traffic Stop in Dorchester

At about 1:30 AM on Tuesday, March 22, 2016, officers assigned to District B-2 (Roxbury) made an onsite firearm arrest after conducting a traffic stop in the area of Columbia Road and Seaver Street in Dorchester. Officers were on routine patrol when they observed a car traveling at a high rate of speed. Officers attempted to pull the vehicle over but it continued driving for several blocks before eventually coming to a stop. Officers learned that the driver, Emmanuel Benjamin, 24, of the South End, was unlicensed and that the vehicle was a rental which he was not authorized to operate. The suspect was then placed in custody without incident. As officers were preparing to tow the motor vehicle, they performed an inventory search which led to the recovery of a loaded Colt Government Model .45 caliber handgun from under the driver’s seat. The suspect will be arraigned in Dorchester District Court on charges of Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, Possession of a Loaded Firearm, Failure to Stop for a Police Officer, Unauthorized Operation of a Motor Vehicle and Operating a Motor Vehicle without a License.
