One Less Gun: Detail Officer Instrumental in Arrest After Brazen Shooting Occurs in Plain Sight in Roxbury

At about 11:19 AM on Wednesday April 20, 2016, an officer assigned to a paid detail made an onsite firearm arrest in the area of 42 Walnut Park in Roxbury.  The officer was working at a construction detail when he observed two males walk by him who appeared to be involved in an argument.  One of the men, Dondre Crawford, 20, of Roxbury, suddenly pulled out a gun and shot the other man several times in plain view of the officer.  The officers immediately pulled out his firearm and gave numerous verbal commands to the suspect to stop and drop the weapon.  The suspect ran towards the officer, gun in hand, but then threw it down onto the street and continued running.  The officer gave chase and called for additional units.  Responding officers were able to locate the suspect a short time later hiding behind a nearby house where he was placed in custody after a brief struggle.  The suspect was then positively identified by the detail officer.  The firearm was recovered and discovered to be a .25 caliber Beretta model 950.  The suspect has been arraigned in Roxbury District Court on charges of Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Discharging a Firearm within 500 Feet of a Dwelling, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, Assault and Battery by Means of a Dangerous Weapon and Resisting Arrest.
