One Less Gun: Officers Recover Loaded Firearm from Drug Dealing Suspect in Mattapan

At about 6:30 PM on Friday June 3, 2016, officers assigned to the Drug Control Unit of District B-3 (Mattapan) made an onsite firearm and drug arrest in the area of 1641 Blue Hill Avenue.  The officers were in the area as part of an active and ongoing investigation when they observed Tony Smith, 44, of Roslindale, seated in a parked motor vehicle.  The officers were preparing to place the suspect in custody on drug related charges and were aware that the he may be in possession of a firearm.  When the suspect observed the officers approaching, he started to close the driver’s side window and tried to put the car in gear.  The officers were able to reach inside the car to prevent the suspect from driving away and a violent struggle ensued.  The suspect punched and pushed the officers while making repeated attempts to grab an object from inside the waistband of his pants as the officers fought to control his arms.  The officers were eventually able to remove the suspect from the car and place him in custody at which time they recovered a loaded Kel Tech Lugar 9mm firearm from the waist area of his pants.  After further investigation it was revealed that the gun had been previously reported stolen in Georgia.  Officers later searched the suspect and recovered a large quantity of drugs and $737.00 dollars in U.S. Currency.

The suspect will be arraigned in Dorchester District Court on charges of Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Carrying a Loaded Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, Distribution of Class A Drugs (2nd and Subsequent), Distribution of Class B Drugs, Possession with Intent to Distribute Class B Drugs, Armed Career Criminal and Receiving Stolen Property over $250 (Firearm).
