At about 6:45 PM on Thursday, June 30, 2016, members of the Youth Violence Strike Force were on directed patrol around Roberts Playground (56 Dunbar Ave) in District B-3 (Mattapan) due to recent firearm-related incidents in the area. Inside the playground, they observed a group of males who were known to them. As officers conversed with the group, they observed suspicious behavior of two individuals in particular. After further investigation of these individuals, the officers recovered two firearms (see pictures), as well as crack cocaine, an unmarked plastic bag of Xanax, and marijuana.
Officers arrested 19-year-old Darren Coolymore-Brown and 19-year-old Rushon Hemenway, both of Dorchester. Coolymore-Brown was charged with Possession with Intent to Distribute Class B (Cocaine) and Possession with Intent to Distribute Class B in a Playground. Hemenway was charged with Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, Unlawfully Carrying a Loaded Firearm, Possession of Class E Drugs, Possession with Intent to Distribute Class E Drugs, and Possession with Intent to Distribute Class E Drugs in a Playground. A third individual in the group, 25-year-old Rohan Anderson of Dorchester, was found to have two active outstanding arrest warrants and was therefore arrested by virtue of those warrants.
Said Police Commissioner Evans, “I commend my officers for their great police work in this incident. With the upcoming busy holiday weekend, their work to get illegal firearms off the street will undoubtedly be beneficial to those celebrating the Fourth in our neighborhoods.”
