Keeping Boston Safe: BPD Officers Make Arrest after Observing Suspect Brandish and Shoot Firearm in South Boston

At about 5:30 PM on Tuesday, July 12, 2016, due to several recent firearm related calls, officers and detectives from District C-6 (South Boston) in collaboration with the Boston Housing Unit were on patrol in the area of Logan Way and Gavin Way.

As officers walked the area, they heard what appeared to be a gunshot and then observed a male with a gun in his hand, pointing the firearm across the street. The male then began running toward the officers while attempting to conceal the firearm in his waistband. The officers drew their department issued firearms and gave the male lawful orders to drop the firearm and put his hands up. After taking several more steps between two parked vehicles, the male placed the firearm on the hood of the vehicle and complied with officers’ orders. The male was placed into custody without further incident, and officers recovered a loaded silver Bersa SA .22 caliber firearm.

Officers arrested 18-year-old Jeffry Ventura of Pawtucket, RI and charged him with Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, Unlawfully Carrying a Loaded Firearm, and Discharging a Firearm within 500 feet of a Dwelling.

Said Police Commissioner William Evans, “Time and time again, I have touted the restraint used by my officers in potentially life-threatening situations like this one. The officers and detectives at this incident were faced with an intense scene, but thanks to their training and quick thinking, the incident was quickly and professionally handled.”
