Great Work Recognized: Sergeant Detective Receives Commendation for Demonstrating Tremendous Restraint When Confronting Knife Wielding Suspect Near TD Garden

During a recent ceremony held at Boston Police Headquarters, Sergeant Detective Mark Vickers assigned to District A-1 (Downtown) was presented with a Commissioner's Commendation for his actions in the line of duty.

On Thursday July 28, 2016, Sergeant Detective Vickers responded to a radio call for a person with a knife in the area of the TD Garden.  Once on scene, he observed a person matching the description of the suspect holding a knife in his hand with the blade extended and exposed.  When the suspect saw Sergeant Detective Vickers, he immediately ran towards his police cruiser while displaying the knife in his clenched hand.  Sergeant Detective Vickers quickly responded to the threat by exiting his vehicle and drawing his department issued firearm while issuing verbal commands to the suspect to stop and drop his weapon.  After several tense moments, the suspect stopped advancing, dropped the knife on the ground and was taken into custody.

Sergeant Detective Vickers displayed compassion, restraint, and sound judgment, which helped prevent the use of deadly force and potential loss of life.   For his response to this dangerous situation, Sergeant Detective Vickers is hereby awarded a Commissioner’s Commendation.
