One Less Gun: Officers Recover Loaded Firearm from Combative Suspect After Traffic Stop in the South End

At about 2:53 AM on Saturday August 27, 2016, officers assigned to the Youth Violence Strike Force placed a suspect in custody on firearm and drug related charges after a traffic stop in the area of Shawmut Avenue and San Juan Street in the South End.  The officers had stopped the vehicle for a traffic violation and were speaking to the operator, Justin Cullinane, 25, of Hyde Park, who was known to them through previous interactions when they observed marijuana, a scale and several plastic bags strewn about the passenger compartment.  The officers removed the suspect from the car when he began reaching towards the right side of his body and concealing his hand from them.  As an officer was performing a pat frisk he felt a firearm in the right side pocket of the suspect’s pants at which time the suspect pushed the officer and attempted to flee.  A violent struggle ensued as the officers fought to gain control of the armed suspect.  The officers were eventually able to place the suspect in custody and safely recover a loaded .380 caliber Ruger handgun from his pocket.  It was later determined that the firearm had an obliterated serial number. The officers also recovered several bags of cocaine and marijuana packaged for sale from the suspect.

The suspect will appear in Boston Municipal Court on charges of Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, Carrying a Loaded Firearm, Possession of a Firearm with an Obliterated Serial Number, Possession with Intent to Distribute Class B Drugs, Possession with Intent to Distribute Class D Drugs and Armed Career Criminal.
