One Less Gun: Suspect in Custody After Loaded Firearm Recovered During Traffic Stop in Roxbury

At about 7:30 PM on Saturday, October 7, 2017, officers assigned to the Youth Violence Strike Force made an onsite firearm arrest after performing a traffic stop in the area of Warren Street and Walnut Avenue in Roxbury. The officers were on routine patrol when they stopped a motor vehicle for a traffic infraction and learned that the operator, Demonte Oates, 18, of Dorchester, did not possess a valid driver’s license.  As the officers began to remove the suspect from the vehicle, he informed them that he had a weapon in his pants pockets. Officers secured the suspect and performed a pat frisk at which time they were able to safely recover a loaded .45 caliber Taurus Millennium handgun. The suspect will appear in Roxbury District Court on charges of Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, Carrying a Loaded Firearm and Operating a Motor Vehicle After Suspension or Revocation.
