At about 12:21 PM on Tuesday, November 14, 2017, an officer working a paid detail made an on-sight firearm arrest in the area of 40 River Street in Mattapan. While directing traffic, the officer observed Jayquan Jones, 22, of Mattapan, who was known to the officer from previous firearm arrests, exiting a residence. Upon seeing the officer, the suspect abruptly changed direction while simultaneously clutching at the waistband area of his pants, leading the officer to believe that he may be armed. When the officer approached the suspect and began to perform a pat frisk, he immediately felt the handle of a firearm at which time a violent struggle ensued. The officer continued to struggle with the suspect while attempting to gain control of the firearm until several additional officers who were also assigned to the detail ran over to assist, placing the suspect in custody without further incident. The officers then safely recovered a loaded .45 caliber Derringer handgun which was later determined to have been previously reported stolen in Virginia. The suspect will appear in Dorchester District Court on numerous charges including Unlawful Possession of a Firearm (2nd and Subsequent), Carrying a Loaded Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition and Receiving Stolen Property.
