Keeping Boston Safe: Officers Arrest Armed Robber after Bystander Tags Him with Pepper Spray


At about 5:35 PM on Wednesday, November 8, 2017, officers from District C-6 (South Boston) responded to a call for an armed robbery in progress in the area of 1284 Mass Ave at PLS Check Cashing.

Upon arrival, officers were informed that a male suspect had approached the counter holding a knife and passed a note indicating that he had a firearm and that this was a robbery. The officers were provided with a description of the suspect and told that a witness waiting in line had pepper sprayed the suspect in the face. The suspect had then fled the scene, dropping the knife as he exited. Officers canvassed the area and observed a male fitting the suspect’s description hiding behind a vehicle on Roseclair Street. Officers observed that the male’s face was red and swollen and smelled of pepper spray. Officers were able to apprehend the male without further incident, and shortly, he was identified as the suspect in the armed robbery. Officers arrested 19-year-old John Mikalauskis, Jr. of Braintree and charged him with Armed Robbery.
