One Less Gun: BPD Officers Recover Two Loaded Guns While Placing Three Suspects in Custody During Two Separate Incidents within Five Hours

INCIDENT #1:  At about 12:45 PM on Monday April 10, 2017, members of the District C-6 (South Boston) Drug Control Unit placed two suspects in custody and recovered a loaded firearm as part of an ongoing investigation in the area of 605 Dorchester Avenue in South Boston.  The officers were aware that the target of their investigation, Leandro Pena, 28, of South Boston, was wanted on several outstanding warrants for Distribution of Class A Drugs, Resisting Arrest and Assault and Battery related charges.  The officers observed the suspect operating a motor vehicle on Old Colony Avenue with a passenger seated in the front, later identified as Jesse Batista, 20, of South Boston, but as the officers attempted to perform a traffic stop, the vehicle sped off.  Additional responding units were able to stop the vehicle after it became blocked in by traffic on Dorchester Avenue.  When they approached, they observed that Batista was now operating the vehicle and that Pena had apparently exited the vehicle and fled on foot.  Batista was placed in custody without incident after officers learned he was wanted on outstanding warrant for Violation of the Auto Laws.  Officers gave out a description of Pena who was located a short time later near a liquor store on Dorchester Avenue by MBTA Transit Police Officers at which time BPD Officers placed him in custody without incident.  Officers later learned that the suspect had entered the store and placed a loaded .380 caliber Keltec handgun behind several cans of soda in a cooler in an attempt to discard the weapon.  The firearm was recovered safely.  Both suspects will appear in South Boston District Court to answer for their warrants.  Additionally, Leandro Pena will be charged with Unlawful Possession of a Firearm and Unlawful Possession of Ammunition.
